ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the impact of dynamic adaptive teaching model on surgical education. Methods Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we adopted dynamic adaptive teaching model in the Department of Breast Surgery, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which divided the whole curriculum into several individual modules and recombined different modules to accommodate to student's levels and schedules. Meanwhile, adaptive strategy also increased the proportion of online teaching and fully utilized electronic medical resources. The present study included quantitative teaching score (QTS) recorded from January 2020 to June 2020, and used the corresponding data from 2019 as control. The main endpoint was to explore the impact of dynamic adaptive teaching model on overall QTS and its interaction effect with trainer's experience and student category. Results Totally, 20 trainers and 181 trainees were enrolled in the present study. With implementation of dynamic adaptive strategy, the overall QTS decreased dramatically (1.76+/-0.84 vs. 4.91+/-1.15, t=4.85, P=0.005). The impact was consistent irrespective of trainers' experience (high experience trainers: 0.85+/-0.40 vs. 2.12+/-0.44, t=4.98, P=0.004;medium experience trainers: 0.85+/-0.29 vs. 2.06+/-0.53, t=4.51, P=0.006;and low experience trainers: 0.10+/-0.16 vs. 0.44+/-0.22, t=2.62, P=0.047). For resident (including graduate) and undergraduate student teaching, both QTS was lower with dynamic strategy (residents: 0.18+/-0.34 vs. 0.97+/-0.14, t=4.35, P=0.007;undergraduate students 1.57+/-0.55 vs. 3.77+/-1.24, t=3.62, P=0.015), but dynamic strategy was effective for post-doc student subgroup and reached comparable QTS as traditional model (0.00+/-0.00 vs. 0.17+/-0.41, t=1.00, P=0.363). Conclusions Dynamic adaptive teaching strategy could be a useful alternative to traditional teaching model for post-doc students. ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the effect of COVID-19 on eye sight due to increase screen time in undergraduate students of medical school. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Place and duration of study: This survey was carried out from October 2022 to December 2022 in Army Medical College Rawalpindi. Questionnaires were filled in person and also online-based platform was used to distribute the e-questionnaire, developed using the Google Form. The participants were asked to share the e-questionnaire with their friends using Facebook and Messenger. Method(s): Participants were selected for the study using non-probability consecutive sampling. College students of 20-25 years were included in the study. Sample size was 400 according to a study done internationally. Participants with comorbidities (cataract, glaucoma) were excluded from study. Participants having (trouble concentrating on things such as reading the newspaper, books or watching television) were included in the study. Digital eye strain was calculated using validated computer vision syndrome (CVS-Q) questionnaire to measure the symptoms such as eye fatigue, headache, blurred vision, double vision, itching eyes, dryness, tears, eye redness and pain, excessive blinking, feeling of a foreign body, burning or irritation, difficulty in focusing for near vision, feeling of sight worsening, and sensitivity to light. Qualitative data was analyzed using Chi square test. Results A total number of 470 responses were recorded, out of which 257 (54.7%) were males and 213(45.3%) were females. In our study, the most common symptom was headache, affecting 58.1% of the population before COVID 19 which has increased to 83.2% and the P value is less than 0.001.Theother symptoms which also showed P value less than 0.001 were blurred vision while using digital device, irritated or burning eyes, dry eyes and sensitivity to bright light. Conclusion The practical implication of the study is to create awareness among general population about COVID, that eye sight is Bull`s Target to be affected by it and simple preventing measures can be taken. The purpose of this study is to limelight the importance that during COVID 19 lockdown the excessive use of digital devices and their cons on the ocular health among future health care workers.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. ABSTRACT

Increased migration and im/migrant (i.e. migrant and immigrant) inequities, particularly during COVID-19, call for experiential global public health teaching to adequately prepare future leaders. We evaluated student perspectives on the benefits, drawbacks, and lessons learned from a migrant health field course in the U.S.-Mexico border region. We analyzed qualitative data from reflexive diary-writing assignments and post-course evaluations from graduate and undergraduate students (N = 12). Students highlighted personal growth and reflexivity, professional development opportunities, and benefits and drawbacks of the immersive course design as key themes. Tri-national learning across Canada, Mexico and the U.S., and an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural learning model allowed for deeper understandings of globally relevant and politically and socially complex issues through community engagement and 'real-world' approaches. Students described benefits of reflexive learning, bridging classroom-based learning with field experiences, and learning about community-engaged research in advancing im/migrant justice, though acknowledged challenges of intensive course design. Narratives highlighted unique needs in navigating challenges inherent in reflexive learning on sensitive topics, such as structural inequities faced by asylum seekers. This evaluation provides unique empirical evidence to inform future experiential learning opportunities rooted in equity-oriented approaches, which are crucial for advancing hands-on learning regarding global issues. ABSTRACT

Purpose of Study: Since the COVID pandemic began, there have been a dearth of opportunities for pre-medical students to work with practicing physicians. This is even truer in health care shortage areas such as California's impoverished San Joaquin Valley where the majority of its residents live below the poverty line and face a number of socioeconomic and educational hardships. Inequitable educational opportunities, lack of STEM identity, as well as lack of access to local mentors contribute to underrepresentation of individuals with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in STEM professions, including medicine. In partnership with the UCSF Fresno Department of Pediatrics we created a summer virtual Medical Education Apprentice Fellowship to help address some of these issues. Methods Used: This seven-week summer program was directed towards disadvantaged high school and undergraduate students living in the San Joaquin Valley. Four pediatric subspecialists, 4 medical students, 64 undergraduate students, and 4 high school students participated in the program. Participants were divided into specialty teams based on their interests, with each team (burn surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, or pulmonology) led by a medical student and faculty. Overall, this program had three primary components: (1) creating animated medical education videos for use in clinics, (2) hosting patient case study series, and (3) providing mentorship and professional development. Summary of Results: Forty-seven percent of students reported being the first in their family to pursue a STEM-related field. Prior to entering this program, only 50% of students felt strongly confident in their ability to be successful in a STEM-related field, and only 30% had a mentor that they fully trusted for guidance and resources. After completing the seven week program, 93% of students reported that they felt the program allowed them to explore medicine in innovative ways, 88% reported that they had made fruitful connections and now have a mentor and resources to guide them, and nearly 75% of students indicated a desire to address the social and health needs of the San Joaquin Valley as a healthcare professional. Conclusion(s): Our Medical Education Apprentice Fellowship provided disadvantaged students in the San Joaquin Valley with an opportunity to improve their digital literacy skills and medical knowledge while receiving mentorship from medical students and physicians. Grassroots programs such as this that form collaborative partnerships between students and health care professionals can be used to foster future healthcare leaders in order to address the health provider shortage in the San Joaquin Valley while providing underrepresented youth the chance to become healthcare champions.

ABSTRACT

To investigate factors associated with poor sleep quality. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 with random sampling. Information on sleep was obtained using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ). Independent variables included sociodemographic, behavioural, academic and psychological health characteristics. Adjusted analyzes were performed using Poisson regression. A total of 996 undergraduate students participated in the study. The poor sleep quality affected 23.1% of the sample (95%CI 20.5-25.9), ranging from 13.4% for those with little concern about violence in the neighbourhood to 36.5% for those with less social support. In the adjusted analysis, female sex [PR] 1.81;(95%CI 1.33-2.45), concern about violence in the neighbourhood [PR] 2.21;(95%CI 1.48-3.28), discrimination at university [PR] 1.42;(95%CI 1.08-1.86) and food insecurity [PR] 1.45;(95%CI 1.11-1.89) were associated with the presence of poor sleep quality, as well as having less social support and income and suffering psychological distress. The results highlight socioeconomic and mental health factors that affect sleep quality and demonstrate the need for reflection and interventions capable of minimizing this problem.Copyright © 2023, Associacao Brasileira de Pos - Graduacao em Saude Coletiva. ABSTRACT

The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the interest in self-care strategies, including self-medication. Medical students, as future health practitioners, learn more about medications than other students. This study aimed to describe self-medication practices for preventing COVID-19 among medical students at Universitas Islam Indonesia. This observational study used a cross-sectional design and was undertaken in November- December 2020. The study sample included 336 undergraduate medical students determined using a consecutive sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using an online questionnaire about self-medication practices in the preceding 3 months. Among a total of 336 students, 137 (41%) reported using self-medication intending to prevent COVID-19, and 126 (92%) of these 137 took preventive supplements, mainly vitamins C, D, and E, and omega-3. Seven students reported the use of zinc, mainly in combination with other vitamins. Students who practiced self-medication lived closer to people confirmed with COVID-19, washed their hands more often, and desinfected their belongings more frequently than their counterparts (p<0.05). The mean duration for consuming vitamins was 11-16 days. Forty students (29%) used herbal medicine to prevent COVID-19;ginger, turmeric, honey, black seed, cutcherry, and Curcuma were the most often consumed herbal remedies. Fourteen students (10%) reported taking over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms related to COVID-19, including antipyretic, analgesic, antiseptic, antihistamine, decongestant, antitussive, and expectorant medications. Most respondents (82%) purchased their medications at pharmacies, and 11 (9%) obtained them from online shops. These findings show the high rate of self-medication using vitamins and herbal remedies for COVID-19 prevention among university medical students. Further studies are needed to explore students' knowledge about the risks of self-medication including the use of herbal medicines.Copyright © 2022 Marmara University Press.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The disruption brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to higher education teaching and learning, as well as to the community engagement opportunities, has also brought about some new learning opportunities. The purpose of the research was to explore the views and to describe their thoughts of the School of Healthcare Sciences (SoHCS) and the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) undergraduate students' on the use of robotics and technology in educating the communities about COVID-19. Method(s): Participatory Action Research (PAR) was used for this study since the students from SoHCS and EBIT were invited to be active participants as future professionals. A total of 27 students volunteered and participated in in-depth interviews. The responses were analysed using ATLAS.ti from nine data sets for qualitative content. Data reduction, coding, and decoding analytic processes were used to analyse and interpret each of these qualitative data forms. Ethical approval was obtained from the research ethics committees in the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology. Result(s): Five themes that emerged from this study are namely: COVID-19 and community challenges and behaviour;COVID-19 communication;COVID-19 knowledge and understanding;COVID-19 myths and COVID-19 robotics and technology education. Conclusion(s): COVID-19 has proven to be a driver of technology innovation and can create new high-touch and high-quality services. Using information technology and robotics in health sciences or in community engagement projects would minimizes the exposure of health care workers and members of the communities to possible infections. These findings also reflect on the importance of engaging the students when interventions are planned because they play an important role as members of the community within the university and outside the university.Copyright © 2022

ABSTRACT

Recently, the 2019 novel coronavirus has rapidly spread throughout China. The medical staff at dermatology departments of some hospitals in Hubei province also participated in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019. However, many problems emerged during this period. Some medical staff at dermatology departments lacked abilities to deal with emergencies, self-protect, and to conduct surveys on skin diseases occurring in this period. In this article, the authors highlight common problems in and give advice on dermatology teaching about national public health emergencies to healthcare workers, undergraduate students, graduate students and senior residents, hoping that healthcare workers at dermatology departments will calmly deal with public health emergencies in the future.Copyright © 2020 by the Chinese Medical Association.

ABSTRACT

Blended learning mixes offline learning activities and resources with online learning activities and resources. The goal of blended learning is to minimise the time spent sitting in class, which is a significant advantage for a College / university. It might aid university officials with enhancing programmes that have low enrollment, reducing expenditures, and fulfilling staff teaching responsibilities. The study is focusing on the perception of the college students towards the online learning program during the pandemic. The blended learning is the unavoidable and safety method of teaching learning process during the pandemic. It is a qualitative study made in Chennai city. The students of higher educational institutions (Arts & Science and Engineering colleges) are considered as samples. 250 sample respondents are selected from the study are using simple random technique. The Google forms was circulated and collected the primary data. Assessment is a very important instrument for measuring the degree of knowledge that a student has in relation to the topic in which they are enrolled in any level of education. ABSTRACT

Exposure to OMFS at undergraduate level is rare. Students seeking such exposure often struggle to access important information that would help them decide about a future career in OMFS. The COVID-19 pandemic has made access to such information, for example career workshops and specialty conferences, more difficult. This paper discusses our experiences of setting up an online webinar series aimed at providing practical advice for undergraduates and early trainees interested in the field of OMFS. Clinicians were approached via email and/or social media to deliver a structured programme of key advice and guidance about OMFS. Individual undergraduate and surgical societies were emailed in order to advertise the series which included talks such as 'Week in the Life', 'Subspecialties' and 'Portfolio Building'. An interactive poster containing a Quick Response code was circulated to allow a streamlined registration process. The seminars were held via Zoom videoconferencing software and feedback collated via Typeform using a Likert-scale questionnaire. On average, the webinars were 60 minutes long and each attracted 53 attendees. The series attracted 183 unique participants. The majority of attendees were dental students and 85% were based in the UK. Overall, 94% felt their knowledge of the specialty had improved and 86% were more likely to consider pursuing OMFS as a career as result of the series. This paper shows that videoconferencing is a useful modality to engage with junior trainees and has a wide reach. These benefits must be harnessed going forward to improve access and exposure to OMFS in early trainees.Copyright © 2022 The Authors

ABSTRACT

The emergence of COVID-19 had affected people in terms of their physical activity and nutritional changes which may increase the risk of various non-communicable diseases (NCD) among them. This study aimed to identify the physical activity level, nutritional changes, and perceived barriers to engage physical activity among students of UiTM Selangor, Puncak Alam Campus during the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia. A total of 234 students aged 18-24 years old were chosen to participate in this study by using convenience sampling. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Physical Activity Resource Assessment (PARA), and adapted questionnaire from the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia were used in this study. Findings reveal that students were able to engage in physical activity level during the pandemic period which required them to be quarantined. Moreover, there was an increase in the frequency of healthy eating behaviour as well as unhealthy eating behaviour during MCO.Copyright © 2023 The Authors.

ABSTRACT

Traditional hydraulic drive experiments present a number of challenges. During the hydraulic transmission experiment, the equipment is easily damaged and must be frequently updated, which makes it difficult for a large number of students to study at the same time;the traditional offline, monotonous, and boring experiments make it difficult for students to increase their interest in learning from what is inherent;and most undergraduate students have to study at home due to the impact of COVID-19. Therefore, students need an excellent teaching system that allows them to perform experiments at home and improve their learning efficiency. A teaching system for the undergraduate hydraulic transmission course was designed to meet the needs of the hydraulic transmission course and to stimulate students' interest in learning. This teaching system allows students to spend more time outside of the class to analyze experimental results and relate concepts presented in lecture courses to experimental results. Finally, a course on hydraulic drives taught at Nanchang University was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this teaching system. The analysis based on positive student feedback and academic performance shows that the proposed teaching system is an effective learning tool for undergraduate students in their learning process. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Background: The association between widespread outbreaks, such as COVID-19, and psychological distress and symptoms of mental illness is common. This study aimed to assess undergraduate students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward COVID-19 and its psychological impact on their life. Method(s): A cross-sectional study was done using a self-administered questionnaire. Result(s): The findings revealed that 11.9% of the participants had COVID-19, and 27.7% of their relatives contracted the disease. The overall rate of correct answers for the knowledge statements was 81.6%. Only 16.5% declared that COVID-19 had an extreme effect on their studies. However, 34% reported rarely or never having felt nervous or anxious during the pandemic. Conclusion(s): The findings revealed that undergraduate students have good knowledge and a positive attitude towards COVID-19, while their practice was poor. Also, the pandemic had a negative psychological impact on some students, thus the need for proactive psychological and social support for students.Copyright © 2023 FIP.

ABSTRACT

With COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the educational system, the professional medical teaching has been shifted to online mode soon after the Government's decision to impose nation-wide lock-down. A cross sectional study was carried out among medical undergraduate in VIMS to know their perception on e-learning. The questionnaire was administered through google forms and the results were analysed using descriptive statistics. Among 340 study subjects, the mean age was found to be 20.47 and the majority of responders were first year undergraduates. Most students depended on smartphones for attending classes. The maximum satisfaction index (55.47%) observed with more time spend on homework and the minimum (39.85%) with greater ability to concentrate in online class. On a Likert scale of perception assessment 32.9% of students disagreed with conducting online classes followed by 31.2% remained neutral. Overall experience recorded bad with 57.6%. ABSTRACT

Students at universities are experiencing food insecurity, which may be associated with health behaviors. In a pilot study to build a survey that assesses food insecurity and health behaviors among undergraduates, we distributed the survey before (Wave 1;fall 2019) and during (Wave 2;summer 2020) COVID-19. During Wave 1, 41% of students reported food insecurity and 61% met criteria for poor sleep. In Wave 2, 26% reported food insecurity and 49% met criteria for poor sleep. Students experiencing food insecurity were more likely to report poor sleep. This survey will inform recruitment and design of a scaled-up multi-campus study. Introduction: The impact of COVID-19 social restrictions on mental wellbeing of health professional students during placement is largely unknown. Conventional survey methods do not capture emotional fluctuations. Increasing use of smartphones suggests short message service (SMS) functionality could provide easy, rapid data. This project tested the feasibility and validity of gathering data on Therapeutic Radiography student mental wellbeing during clinical placement via emoji and SMS. Methods: Participants provided anonymous daily emoji responses via WhatsApp to a dedicated mobile phone. Additional weekly prompts sought textual responses indicating factors impacting on wellbeing. A short anonymous online survey validated responses and provided feedback on the method. Results: Participants (n = 15) provided 254 daily responses using 108 different emoji;these triangulated with weekly textual responses. Feedback concerning the method was positive. 'Happy' emoji were used most frequently;social interaction and fatigue were important wellbeing factors. Anonymity and opportunity to feedback via SMS were received positively;ease and rapidity of response engendered engagement throughout the 3-week study. Conclusions: The use of emoji for rapid assessment of cohort mental wellbeing is valid and potentially useful alongside more formal evaluation and support strategies. Capturing simple wellbeing responses from a cohort may facilitate the organisation of timely support interventions. © The Author(s), 2022. Published by Cambridge University Press.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity increased across the United States, with college students being particularly vulnerable. This study surveyed 1989 undergraduates attending three public colleges before and during the first year of the pandemic. At all times, students' food insecurity was related to worse academic performance, greater housing insecurity, poorer psychological and physical health, and less access to healthcare. Compared to pre-pandemic students, during-pandemic students reported greater use of and fewer barriers to food programs, spending more on and and receiving more government aid for food, experiencing more academic difficulties due to food insecurity, having greater housing insecurity, and enduring less access to healthcare. © 2022 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ABSTRACT

Background Online learning can play a vital role in the process of teaching and learning during Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, learners' satisfaction is extremely important in effective implementation of the online learning, especially at institutions where it is newly adopted. Objective To assess satisfaction towards online learning and its predictors among students at Chitwan Medical College, Bharatpur. Method A web-based cross-sectional survey was undertaken among 434 undergraduate and postgraduate students from various academic programs who had participated in the online classes started during this COVID-19 pandemic. A structured questionnaire consisting of 31 items (5-point Likert scale) covering four major student satisfaction domains (learners' dimensions, technological characteristics, instructors' characteristics and course management and coordination) was distributed to the students using Google Form. Result More than half (53.5%) of the students were satisfied with the online learning, while 29.7% gave neutral views. Bivariate analyses found that all four domains scores were positively correlated with each other as well as with the students' overall satisfaction towards learning. In multivariate analysis, female gender [aOR: 2.72, p = 0.013], WiFi as internet modality for learning [aOR: 3.36, p = 0.001) and learners' dimension score [aOR: 1.27, p<0.001] were the significant predictors of students' satisfaction. Conclusion Although recently adopted, the satisfaction of the students towards online classes appears good, and prioritizing the identified predictors and working on the weak links could assist in enhancing students' satisfaction and better outcomes. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Annual Pharmacy Symposium organised by the Department of Pharmacy, University of Malta, Malta, brings together academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, collaborators and stakeholders to discuss outcomes of student research projects as oral and poster presentations. The 2021 Pharmacy Symposium was held online for the first time via the Zoom platform due to restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to evaluate student perception of the remote modality used. Method(s): A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to students who attended the symposium at the end of the four-day symposium. Students were asked to rate on a five-point Likert scale from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree' with regards to remote environment used and appreciation of the transmission of scientific information in the presentations. Result(s): Out of 370 students who attended the symposium, 19% (n = 72) completed the questionnaire. Forty-four students were female, and the ages of the students ranged from 18 to 51 years. The majority of students (n = 46) were undergraduate students. The majority of students gave positive feedback (scores of 4 or 5) about the symposium: 71 students felt the virtual symposium was well organised, 69 students agreed that the platform used was appropriate, 66 students agreed that the quality of research presented was of a high standard and 57 students agreed that presentations were understandable and stimulating. Fifty-five students felt that the duration of the oral sessions was appropriate, 40 students enjoyed visiting the virtual poster gallery and 38 students found it easy to access the virtual poster gallery. Conclusion(s): The virtual pharmacy research symposium was positively evaluated by students indicating that it is a suitable forum to support students in developing competencies in research dissemination and to appreciate ongoing research by other students.
